A super hardy perennial, USDA zones 3-8, Japanese Iris has long sword-like leaves similar to daylilies. Bloom time is mid-late spring. Flower color bluish purple to lavender. Very easy to grow in any rich, moist soil. Will even grow in standing water, perfect for planting around ponds and streams.

If the roots were long tubers on the surface, they were probably flag Iris, like you said. These have a very think root system but deep in the soil instead of on the surface like bearded Iris have.
