A super hardy perennial, USDA zones 3-8, Japanese Iris has long sword-like leaves similar to daylilies. Bloom time is mid-late spring. Flower color bluish purple to lavender. Very easy to grow in any rich, moist soil. Will even grow in standing water, perfect for planting around ponds and streams.

i just transplanted something like this tonight i thought they were purple flags , all i know is they are hardy they grew between patio pavers

If the roots were long tubers on the surface, they were probably flag Iris, like you said. These have a very think root system but deep in the soil instead of on the surface like bearded Iris have.

dont know the roots were like 3 inches i used a pitchfork to pick them up they came up like i was peeling sod up

Like it says, seeds. They produce many each year unless I deadhead. They grow very quickly.
