History:
The large cent was first introduced in 1858 and originally issued to bring order to the Canadian monetary system, which until then relied on British coinage, bank tokens and commercial tokens. It features maple leaves wrapped around a vine on it’s reverse. They are also commonly called pennies.
Production of the large cent was abolished in 1920 in favor of a smaller diameter coin aptly named the small cent. Large cents were not immediately withdrawn from circulation, and were allowed to circulate until the late 1930s.
